Balsam
(Impatiens balsamina)
Once a favorite of Victorian gardens, this old-fashioned annual adds an exotic, almost gaudy touch to the garden. It offers interesting, trumpet-shape blooms, mostly in shades of pink. Many selections have bicolor flowers. Balsam often self-seeds in the garden and is very easy to grow.
Plant established plants outdoors in spring after all danger of frost has passed. Balsam needs rich, well-drained soil to do best, so work in plenty of compost. (It's ideal in containers as long as you don't let the plants dry out for even a second.) Fertilize lightly but regularly.

So pretty Debbi,
they remind me of lady slippers.
Don't hate me but we just planted some impatients in the garden. I have the more common variety, but they grow well now that the temps are cooler. They should last until the new year.
Your garden is a joy to visit, Char
Very pretty! I have aregular impatiens all over...I think I need some of those!
It is spring here in Australia, and I have been buying plants for our garden too. I looked at them and realised that the majority were pink! So I guess I love pink flowers too. But these are really gorgeous - really inspiring. I must have a look and see if I can find the seeds here too.
Sandie.
Stunning flowers! I love the rich color. Will have to look for these seeds next spring ~
Your photos and blog are sooo beautiful !

I grow these every year! My friends and I trade different colors. It is a wonderful flower for late summer into fall. In the fall, before the first frost, I pull the plants and lay the whole plant in the new spot I want it for next year.
These really are gorgeous-and when I saw that they tolerate light shade I was excited! I have plenty of spots in my garden where Balsam would be perfect!
sono senza parole..che meraviglia... baci lù
